In the early 80's a neighborhood was built on the Hawaii Kai marina called Anchorage. Back then, no one knew the homes would be averaging over a million dollars in 2006, but their large marina front yards were destined to be a hit.
Many of the homes have now been updated or remodeled with larger, more open kitchens and lighter colors. For some reason in 1980 it was popular to use dark woods for kitchen cabinets.
The lots in Anchorage are large for Hawaii's standards, at about 7000-10,000 ft each. That allows for a lot of pools and big lanais with marina views.
The cheapest home available right now in Anchorage is $1,059,000 for a 4 bedroom 3 bath house. While it's not the high end luxury of Portlock or Lanikai, this neighborhood in the back portion of Hawaii Kai has a really nice charm. What my wife would call, "neighborhoody." (She likes to add a "y" on the end of words to make them into adjectives.)

The marina front homes usually have a dock, which allows boat owners great access to the ocean. You can get from Anchorage to the open sea in just a few minutes by boat.
Yesterday I was viewing a home near here and saw dozens of jellyfish and ray, so I don't recommend swimming.
Driving from Anchorage to town will take you 30 minutes with no traffic, and up to an hour or more with bad traffic. People do the commute everyday because it's just such a great place to live. Compared to living in town or on the west side, Hawaii Kai is truly in a class above.
