Diamond Head / Kahala
If there
is one landmark that everyone remembers from Oahu, it's probably
Diamond Head. No, there are no diamonds in it, but there is
quartzite, which sort of looked like diamonds to people visiting the
islands hundreds of years ago.
Located
just a few miles from downtown Honolulu, Diamond Head is the first high
end community east of town. With beautiful homes like this one
starting at about $3million, Diamond Head is home to Oahu's CEO's and
captains of industry. Within the Diamond Head area is Kahala, the
pinnacle of East Oahu real estate. Custom ocean front and ocean
view estates in Kahala command as much as $15million, with the elegance
and luxury that only the wealthiest can afford.
Though
luxurious and expensive, Diamond and Kahala are surprisingly quaint and
unintimidating, with an appeal that says Hawaii in many ways. The
homes, though large and impressive, don't have the overwhelming feeling
of opulance of California high end neighborhoods like Bel Aire and
Westlake Village. With all its grandness, Diamond
Head has managed to stay a true neighborhood, though your neighbors
might be more influencial than in other areas of the island.
A
beautiful little public beach is just off Kahala ave and has the feel
of any simple Oahu beach, except for the gorgeous mansions across the
street. While most the beaches in Diamond Head are rock and not
sand, there are some little spots for those seeking the soft feel of
our whitish sand.
Oahu's
best private golf course, Waialae country club, is located in Kahala,
and allows for golf course living second to none on the island.
Some of the homes on Waialae country club's fairways also have an ocean
view, making them the best of both worlds on Oahu.
Diamond Head Ammenities
The beautiful Kapiolani park is one of the
best features of Diamond Head. It's vast size and lush mature
trees make it a great place to spend the day with friends and
family. Even though it's just one block from Waikiki, it feels
like a different world - peaceful, quiet, and truly enjoyed by all the
neighbors. There are frequent events in the park, including
concerts, craft fairs, and even NFL pro bowl events. But best of
all is just the ability to have a quiet picnic with friends and play a
game of volleyball or even go across the street for a surf at Old
Man's, Tongs, or Castles.

Several
small restaurants are in Diamond Head, along with the Diamond Head
Market, which has great lunches. My family prefers Mi Casa, nice
Mexican food with an outdoor feel. The Kahala mall also has
several restaurants and stores, so you hardly ever need to go into town
to Ala Moana or Pearlridge mall.
I could
mention several other ammenities in Diamond Head and Kahala, but the
best reason to live in this wonderful area is it's proximity to town
(Honolulu). The longer you live in Oahu, the more you will
appreciate being able to quickly get in and out of town.
Diamond Head Real estate
Homes in
Diamond head begin around $1.5 million for a small property, while
condos begin very low for leasehold, and around $1million for fee
simple. While Diamond Head and Kahala are not large in square
miles, there is quite a range of different options for real
estate.
Ocean
front condos on "the gold coast" can range from $1million all the way
up to $5million, while estates in Kahala begin around $3million and
sell for as much as $15million. Most homes in Diamond Head and
Kahala were custom made, and while many of them are now getting old and
are in need of remodeling or rebuilding, several of the owners have
already taken on these projects. This has resulted in a
rejuvination of Diamond Head and Kahala lately, with construction going
on nearly on every street.
The
oceanfront properties in Diamond Head are truly world class, with views
to the horizon and custom homes to satisfy any taste. The boom of the
90's created several mini mansions in Kahala, and the most recent boom
has created even more custom ocean front estates with mind boggling
features. I recently visited an ocean front home with 4
refrigerators, 4 dish washers, 2 sets of laundry machines, 2 master
suites, and the list goes on. For a mere $9.5million, you can
have just about anything you want in a home!

Diamond Head area weather
The weather in Diamond Head and Kahala is ideal year round, with a nice cool breeze and moderate temperatures. It doesn't rain nearly as much in Diamond Head and Kahala as it does on the Windward side in Kailua or Kaneohe, and the wind is not as strong. For a dryer climate than the Windward side, but cooler than the west side, Diamond Head, and really all of East Oahu, are ideal.
