Buy a house to save your life - seriously.

Friday, December 17th, 2010 at 11:21am. 669 Views, 3 Comments.

Did you ever think of your house as a financial safety net?

I read a post this morning on Gigi Hawaii's blog, in which she explained that owning a home is about to save her life, so to speak.

She writes, "We plan to apply for a reverse mortgage next month... If the reverse mortgage goes through, we will pay off our two mortgages and David’s car loan, thereby saving $3,000 per month.  ... We have no choice but to do this. When he was demoted in July, David had a $23,000 pay cut. We have been struggling to meet our financial obligations ever since. With a reverse mortgage, we will be able to breathe a sigh of relief. Thank God, we own a house. Where would we be if we were renting?"

The answer to her question is probably - on…

Obama's Hawaii Vacation Begins Next Week - 30 Pictures Of The Kailua Beach House

Friday, December 17th, 2010 at 4:02am. 1930 Views, 2 Comments.

Next week, President Barack Obama will arrive in Oahu for his annual Hawaii vacation.  I've had several occassions to be in the vacation home that the President rents, since I had a few interested buyers when it was for sale for $9.5 million.

This beachfront Kailua property has about half an acre right on the sand, and looks straight down Kailua beach.  The house is only 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, and about 5000 square feet.  Not too big, considering many houses on the mainland are triple that size. The location on Kailua beach can't be beat.  This will be the 3rd year in a row that the President has rented this house.  Make sure to read the full post to view all 30 pictures!

It's 80 Degrees Warm In Hawaii!

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010 at 4:30pm. 884 Views, 0 Comments.

Many of my friends and readers all over mainland America and the world are starting to experience the cold of Winter. I just saw a few people on Facebook post something about snow on the ground, cold noses, and cold houses. hawaii-beach_550

I like to remind people, while their hands and feet are freezing and their cars are warming up in the snow, that

IT'S WARM ALL YEAR IN HAWAII !!

Today in Honolulu Hawaii, it's 85 degrees, sunny and breezy.  I'm typing this post in shorts and a T-shirt, and it's a beautiful day outside.  People are at the beach, and my wife is hiking Makapuu lighthouse with friends.

In contrast, in Colorado Springs Co, it's 49 degrees.  In Columbus Ohio it's 35 degrees and snowing. Bozeman Montana is 32 and snowing.

And that's why…

Book: Dying of Money: Lessons of the Great German and American Inflations

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010 at 2:47pm. 2198 Views, 0 Comments.

I'm currently reading "Dying of Money: Lessons of the Great German and American Inflations."  It's a very insightful and fact filled book which is part history and part economics lessons.  Readers will learn mucuh about Keynesian economics, which in part caused the downfall of Germany's paper money and the massive hyper-inflation that resulted. hyperinflation1_553

In short, Keynsian economics says the governments should intervene in recessions by printing money and lowering interest rates, in order to stimulate the economy.  Sound familiar? Bernanke and Obama are strict Keynsian economists.

In the 1920's, "When the debacle was finally stopped, the old (German) mark, which had once been worth a solid 23 cents, was written off at one trillion old marks to one new one…

Waimea Valley Waterfall Walk - North Shore Oahu

Friday, November 19th, 2010 at 4:01pm. 1071 Views, 1 Comments.

The North Shore is usually thought of for huge waves and world class surfing. In the summer the North Shore's biggest and wave, Waimea Bay, turns into a beautiful calm beach.  While these are the two things that mostly draw people to Waimea, there is also the Waimea valley waterfall walk.

Some people call it a hike, but when you see it you will agree that it is just a pleasant walk.  The waterfall walk is about a half mile or so on a nicely paved path, which starts at this little info shack and ticket counter.  It costs about $30 for a family of four if you live here, and about $100 if you don't.

Along the way you'll see some beautiful trees, plants, and probably a peacock or two.  It's not steep except for one spot near the end, and the…

Mortage rates are stupid low! In Oct 2000, rates were 8%

Monday, October 25th, 2010 at 5:12pm. 501 Views, 0 Comments.

The interest rate on my first home loan was 9.875%.  In my early 20's I bought my first condo and was happy that my loan was not over 10%, since I had no credit and little job history.

To put it in perspective, if you borrowed $500,000 at 9.875% on a 30yr loan, your payment would be $4341/month.  At today's 4.5% rate, the payment is $2533/month. That's a difference of $1808.

Now home prices are about double what they were 10 years ago, but the cost to own a house is only 31% higher, not 100% higher, due to the lower interest rates.

Today           = 4.25%

Oct 2000     = 7.875%.

Oct 1990     = 10.25%.

Oct 1984    = 13.5% !!!

Let's see how that…

Hawaii is #2 - States Where the Most People Would Like to Live

Thursday, October 21st, 2010 at 1:28am. 798 Views, 0 Comments.

The Harris poll released their latest results and found that Hawaii is the 2nd most desired State to live in.

From their site: "Notwithstanding its economic and political problems, more Americans would like to live in California than in any other state. For the seventh time in a row since 2002 California tops the list of states where the most people would like to live if they did not live in their own states. The next most popular states are Hawaii, Florida, Colorado, Arizona, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas, New York and Washington."

Well, since California will be bankrupt soon, and overrun by illegal immigrants within a few years, I think it's safe to say that Hawaii is probably the place that most Americans would like to live.  Not…
