If you want to live on the Hawaii Kai marina without the maintenance and cost of a single family home, then there are several marina front condos and town home complexes to choose from. You can still have a boat dock and some of these condos, and for a monthly maintenance fee of between $500 and $1000, You can choose from high-rise condos like Esplanade, low-rise condos like Colony at the Peninsula, two story townhomes like Mawaena Kai, Kuapa Isle and Koko Isle, duplexes, and several other that you may not have heard of.
While that $500-$1000/mo maintenance fee may sound high, they usually include the following: water, sewer fee, trash, fire insurance, and all exterior maintenance. That means you never have to do any painting or worry about the roof, driveway, and probably the fences and gates too.
Hawaii Kai marina front condos are priced between $700k and about $1.2mil, much cheaper than the single family homes, which are about $1.4- $2mil as of Jan 2018. If you want something that can be easily locked up and left vacant for a while, a condo or town home is probably your best bet. That’s why many people choose these for 2nd homes.
While you probably cannot rent out the condo or town home on a short term basis, because local zoning laws and association rules prohibit that practice, you can rent it out 6 months at a time, if you plan to be here in Hawaii only half the year.
The Hawaii Kai marina allows you to have a motor boat or sail boat with a height of up to 13 feet, which means some very large boats can fit. This limit is because of the Kalanianaole Hwy bridge that you have to go under before you get to the ocean.
One of the best things about living on the marina is the annual Hawaii Kai Christmas boat parade.
This parade has become one of our family traditions, and the kids love seeing all the neighbor’s boats decorated, while eating some great food at the Hawaii Kai Towne Center. People who live on the marina have big parties, and everyone wants to be invited to a Christmas boat parade party!
Living on the marina also has the added benefit of being able to take your boat to the Hawaii Kai towne center. They have a community dock, so you can go from your home to Costco in your boat, and go for a sunset cruise afterwards! How many people can say they go grocery shopping in a boat!?
