It seems like everyone wants to own a condo on Oahu, and if there is one place in that might be the best, it would be the Gold Coast of Diamond Head. Now unless you live in Hawaii, you probably haven't heard of the Gold Coast, but if you've visited Waikiki then you've probably seen it. Just east of Waikiki after you pass the aquarium, there is a little strip of condos and a few great houses right on the beach.

With incredible views like the one pictured above, just about every Gold Coast condominium has a vast ocean view. Some Gold Coast condos face the mountain or have a side view of the coast instead of a direct ocean view, but there is hardly a bad spot on the Gold Coast.
There are several tall condominium developments to choose from that were built in the 1950's and 60's, including: Tahitienne, Colony Surf, Tropic Seas, 2987 Kalakaua, 3003 Kalakaua, Diamond Head Ambassador, Diamond Head Beach Hotel, Kainalu, San Souci Inc, 3019 Kalakaua Ave Apt, Coral Strand Ltd., and Oceanside Manor.
The buildings are old, which is something you have to deal with on the Gold Coast, no matter what. Many of the condos themselves have been renovated inside, so once you're in the unit, it will feel pretty new. The buildings themselves—being 50 years old—are not the best or most modern, as you can imagine, but it's the old Hawaii charm that locals love about the Gold Coast. If you want new, you probably should look in Waikiki, at the Koolani, Hokua, or Keola Lai. The older condos of the Gold Coast offer something totally different. You can call it charm or character, or something else, but once you've spent some time here, you'll see why people love it.
Many Gold Coast HI condos are leasehold, which means that you don't own the land, and when the lease is over, there is a 99% chance that you are going to lose your unit. Fee simple properties on the beach can go for about $4 million for a nice 3-bedroom condo. You can purchase a small "starter" condo on the Gold Coast for just under $1 million, fee simple.
When you live in the Gold Coast of Diamond Head, you can walk to the Outrigger Canoe Club, an upscale social and paddling club where the well-to-do in East Oahu meet for drinks while watching the sunset. You can relax or play in Kapiolani Park, a beautiful spot with massive mature trees that look like something out of a storybook. Of course, the Gold Coast is also just a few minutes' walk to Waikiki, so you have every restaurant and store at your disposal. It's funny how Waikiki is only a half mile away, but it might as well be a different city, because you'll rarely see tourists on the beaches of the Gold Coast.
The Honolulu Zoo and The Waikiki Aquarium are right next to the Gold Coast, and you can take a short bike ride up to the Diamond Head Market for a sandwich. It's just a wonderful place to live—the ultimate little beach town, even though it's not an entire town.
