Ewa Beach is an evolving, popular community for families and all those looking for affordable housing. Originally, the Ewa Plain was a plantation farm and now-a-days it has transformed into a suburban haven.

Located only a few miles to the south of O’ahu Second City, Kapolei, the community of Ewa has access to all the shopping, entertainment, and dinning Kapolei has to offer. Ewa Beach is a predominantly residential community which provides an inviting family atmosphere with everything you need for convenience as either a Safeway, Foodland, Walgreens, & Longs can be found nearby.

The Ewa Plain consists of several neighborhoods - Ewa by Gentry, Ocean Pointe by Haseko, Kapolei, Westloch, and several smaller older developments. Gentry itself has about 20 different neighborhoods, including new ones like Haleakea, Cypress, and Latitudes. When you go there for the first time, you'll likely think to yourself, "Wow, this is pretty nice! There are new homes everywhere!" To people visiting Oahu from the mainland, it's surprising to find a large selection of newer homes in Hawaii for a reasonable price.  Why are Ewa Beach homes nicer, newer, and cheaper than other areas?  One word - traffic.

You can get a nice new three bedroom 2 bath 1800 sq. ft. house in the Ewa area for about $700k. That same house would cost about $1 million in Hawaii Kai, on the opposite side of the island, but you have to drive about an hour each way, up to 2 hours each way some days.

Commuting and Community Development in Ewa Beach

In Oahu, location is everything, and Ewa Beach is about 45 minutes to an hour from downtown Honolulu in traffic, which is the primary reason it's cheaper than other areas. For less money, you can get a bigger, newer and nicer looking house in Ewa Beach than in other parts of the island, and you just have to live with the drive time. And many people feel that it's worth the drive.  With new shopping malls, newer schools, newer homes, and plenty of golf courses, life on the Ewa side of Oahu is pretty great for many people.

You can still buy brand new Ewa Beach real estate from builders right now for about $650k. Of course, there are also high-end homes for over $1 million in Ewa too.  There are some beautiful golf course frontage homes in Hoakalei that are as high as $1.4million!  These are over 3500 sqft and have everything you might expect from a semi-luxury home.

The newest housing development evolving exponentially in Ewa Beach and into Kapolei is Ho’opili from trusted builder D.R. Horton. Improvements in Ewa Beach and Kapolei!

The City and County of Honolulu widened the road into Ewa Beach back in 2013, so there is way less traffic than there used to be, once you get off the freeway.  The short drive on Fort Weaver road that once took over 30 minutes now takes about 5.  Also the State has built a new courthouse and a UH Campus in Kapolei, which has eased traffic a bit as fewer people have to drive all the way to Town.  And now with new malls and a connecting road between Ewa and Kapolei, things are really looking up in the Ewa Plain.

Ewa Beach offers something that people really like in spite of the commute to town: new affordable homes. There are over a hundred new homes being built at any given time in Ewa. And if you like golf, Ewa and Kapolei have the most golf courses per square mile on Oahu.

Kapolei now has huge mall being built called Kapolei Commons, with dozens of stores, a movie theater, and more.  With Target as its anchor, it's now the newest and nicest mall besides Ala Moana.

Entertainment & Dining

Ewa Beach has a blend of local and chain restaurants scattered throughout the community. Laulani Village Center is a lively shopping center with a variety of stores, such as Ross, Petco, Safeway, and Walgreen’s, along with some popular eateries: Teddy’s Bigger Burgers, Buffalo Wild Wings, Panda Express, Pearl’s Korean BBQ, and a few local restaurants. In the heart of Ewa, there are a vast array of tasty cuisine from L & L Hawaiian BBQ, Zippy’s, Tiano’s Restaurant, to 808 Bowls, a small café with delicious acai bowls and more.

For the avid golfers, Ewa Beach provides multiple stunning courses within various neighborhoods, some even with delicious restaurants. Right on the border of Ewa and Kapolei is Ka Makana Ali’i Mall with stores ranging from Macy’s to Forever 21 to local boutiques and hosts a variety of big-name restaurants, such as The Cheesecake Factory and California Pizza Kitchen, along with a widespread food court with many chain and local options. Ka Makana Ali’i is also home to a luxury cinema which allows families to enjoy the newest films in comfort. Only a few minutes down the road from Ka Makana Ali’i is the Kroc Center, which is an innovative community center with a pool, fitness center, daycare, event facility, and much more.

Beaches

Many neighborhoods in Ewa Beach border the shoreline, such as Ocean Pointe, which allows for great views of the sunset from the southside of the island. About a 10 to 15-minute drive from the heart of Ewa are White Plains Beach and Nimitz Beach which are the perfect beaches for family gatherings as they have multiple pavilions and picnic tables. White Plains Beach is also a very popular beach for surfers and beach volleyball players.

About 15 to 20 minutes down H-1 West into Kapolei, you can visit Ko Olina Resort, which is home to Aulani Disney Resort, a Marriot Beach Club Resort, and a Four Seasons Resort. Ko Olina Resort has five gorgeous lagoons, perfect for keiki to swim safely or for wading in calm waters. All five lagoons are open to the public. Ko Olina also offers shops and popular, enjoyable restaurants, including MonkeyPod, which is a great spot for happy hour and live music on the patio.
